Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Center (IECC) complex at Pragati Maidan in Delhi today (July 26). The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) claims that it will be one of the world’s leading exhibition and convention complexes. A meeting of G-20 leaders is proposed in this complex in September.

The statement issued by the PMO informed that the project was developed as a national project at a cost of about Rs 2,700 crore. With a campus area of approximately 123 acres, the IECC campus has been developed as India’s largest MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) destination. In January 2017, the government had agreed to set up a world-class IECC in the national capital, approving the proposal of the India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) for the redevelopment of Pragati Maidan.

The PMO said that the vision of the Prime Minister to create a world-class infrastructure for hosting meetings, conferences and exhibitions in the country has embodied the concept of IECC at Pragati Maidan.

Inspired by Indian architectural traditions

The architectural design of the Convention Center building is inspired by Indian traditions. The shape of the building is like a conch shell. ‘Zero to ISRO’ refers to India’s achievement in space. At the same time, the universal basis of the Panchmahabhoot elements of sky, air, fire, water and earth has also been underlined. The multi-purpose hall and plenary hall have a combined capacity of 7,000 people, the amphitheater will seat 3,000 people. At the same time, Australia’s famous Sydney Opera House has a seating capacity of 55,00.
