“For the first time in Haryana, a party is returning to power for the third time”: PM Modi
New Delhi: Haryana has created history by bringing the BJP to power for the third consecutive time in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today at the BJP headquarters as he congratulated party workers for the unprecedented victory. He also launched a scathing attack on the Congress, which he called, among other things, a “parasitic party” that wins only when it has the support of its alliance partner.
“In Jammu and Kashmir, their allies were saying they will face defeat because of the Congress. Even in the Lok Sabha, they won most seats because of their alliance partners. In some states, many alliance partners suffered because of the Congress. They swallowed them up and destroyed them in the state,” PM Modi said, setting the tone for the next round of elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand – these are the states where the Congress is fighting as part of an alliance.
“Haryana was formed in 1966… 13 elections have been held in Haryana so far and in 10 elections, people have changed the government,” he said. “After five years and the last three elections, this has not happened. This is the first time that a government has managed to get two terms and win the third. The people of Haryana not only made us win but also gave us more seats and more vote share. They voted for us wholeheartedly,” he said.
In Haryana, the BJP is set to register a historic third consecutive victory, a move many thought it would lose due to massive anti-incumbency, anger among farmers and Jats and resentment over the Agniveer scheme. The party is leading in 48 of the state’s 90 seats, while the Congress is at 37 – far from the majority mark of 46.
The bulk of the Prime Minister’s speech focused on the Congress – a party he said is against the youth and the army, anti-India, tries to “ruin the reputation of every institution that Indians are proud of”.
“Before the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress, its alliance partners and urban Naxal friends went to court several times to disrupt the functioning of these institutions. They question their neutrality, their independence. They have been doing this very often,” he said.
The massive win in Haryana and good performance in Jammu have come as a big boost for the BJP, which is disappointed with the Lok Sabha election results.
