Shimla, August 11: A recent study conducted by the Himalayan Organization for Organic Agri Products and Research Development has revealed a worrying link between excessive use of pesticides in agriculture and the sharp rise in fatal diseases like cancer in Himachal Pradesh.

According to research, 80 to 90 percent of farmers and apple growers in the state are not using pesticides scientifically. Instead, many people buy and use pesticides suggested by shopkeepers, often without proper guidance or consideration of their effectiveness. This indiscriminate use of chemicals has been identified as a major factor contributing to the rise in cancer cases and other serious health problems.

The study highlights two main ways in which this misuse of pesticides is affecting public health. First, consumers are directly consuming contaminated food. Second, pesticides sprayed in hilly areas are getting into the water supply with rain, leading to widespread contamination of drinking water sources. This dual risk is accelerating the spread of diseases.

The survey also found a significant change in the health situation in Himachal Pradesh, where cancer cases are increasing rapidly in various districts. Long queues at cancer hospitals are now common, with many patients unable to access treatment due to financial constraints.

The findings underscore the urgent need for better education and regulation about pesticide use in agriculture. Without intervention, the health crisis in Himachal Pradesh could worsen, affecting not only those directly involved in farming but the entire population consuming contaminated produce and water.
