Shimla, 19 August: Due to Bhadra Kaal, Raksha Bandhan festival was dull in Keonthal area on Monday. Due to Bhadra Kaal being till 1.30 in the day, for the first time enthusiasm among sisters was seen less towards Raksha Bandhan. Most of the working sisters went to their brother’s house in the morning and left Rakhi and returned home. On the other hand, especially in rural areas, women could not even avail the benefit of free travel in HRTC buses.

Let us tell you that HRTC has closed many routes in rural areas, the buses of the routes which are running also leave at 7 in the morning. However, crowd of women buying Rakhi was seen at shops. Senior citizens Pritam Thakur, Dinesh Arya told that according to their life experiences, Bhadra has never been seen on the festival of Raksha Bandhan. This has been seen for the first time. Secondly, in the past, especially in rural areas, there was never a tradition of tying Rakhi. On Raksha Bandhan, the priest used to come to the house in the morning and tie a mauli rakhi, in return for which he was given dakshina in the form of grains etc. The practice of sisters tying rakhi to their brothers and observing the fast of Karva Chauth started in the 80s.

Know what is Bhadra

Many astrologers and learned pundits who know the rituals say that Bhadra is the daughter of Lord Suryadev and sister of King Shanidev. Like King Shani, Bhadra is considered to be harsh in nature. All auspicious works are prohibited during Bhadrakaal. Whereas Bhadrakaal is considered auspicious for tantric practice, court and political work. It is believed that Ravana was tied a rakhi by his sister during Bhadrakaal, due to which Ravana had a short life.

How did the tradition of Rakhi start

According to the Puranas, in the Satyuga, Mother Lakshmi tied a rakhi for the first time to the great donor King Bali. According to the story, King Bali was considered to be a great donor. To test King Bali, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vaman and asked King Bali for three steps of land, to which the king agreed.

Lord Vaman measured the entire earth in two steps. When the turn for the third step came, King Bali offered his head and also asked for a boon from God that Lord Vishnu would also live with him in the netherworld. When Mother Lakshmi came to know about this, she took the form of an old woman and tied a Rakhi to King Bali in the netherworld on the full moon day of Bhadra month and pleaded to release Lord Vishnu.

Despite this, King Bali requested Lord Vishnu to sleep in the netherworld for four months of the year. Similarly, mention of the Rakhi tied by Draupadi to Lord Krishna is found in the Puranas.
