Shimla, August 17: Strongly criticizing the latest proposal of the government, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur expressed his disagreement with the plan to set up a tourism village on the campus of Palampur Agriculture University. Thakur termed the idea as “ridiculous” and argued that it diverts attention from the primary mission of agricultural universities, which is to conduct teaching, training and research focused on agriculture.

Jairam Thakur emphasized the important role of agricultural universities in making India self-sufficient in food grain production. He urged the government to allow these institutions to continue their essential work without any interference. “If the government wants to create a tourism village, it is welcome, but it is unfortunate to do so within an institution created to increase agricultural productivity,” Thakur said.

The Leader of Opposition highlighted the importance of land in agricultural research, saying researchers require vast land areas for long-term studies. He pointed out that agricultural research institutes across the world have adequate land to carry out their work effectively. Thakur suggested that if the chief minister feels that there is excess land in Palampur Agricultural University, it should be used to set up new departments and research centres related to agriculture.

“The BJP cannot accept the government’s decision to build a tourism village at Palampur Agricultural University. We will oppose this move both on the streets and in the Assembly,” Thakur warned.

Thakur called upon the government to focus on developing agricultural universities in a way that supports groundbreaking research, which he described as a “boon to humanity”. He stressed the need for the government to recognize the significant contribution of these institutions and prioritise their expansion and growth over other ventures.
