In a worrying development, 23 medicines made in Himachal Pradesh have been declared substandard by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and the state drug controller. The failed medicines include treatments for serious ailments such as heart attack, diabetes and cancer, raising concerns about drug safety in the region. The findings come as part of a nationwide drug alert issued in September, in which 67 medicines were found to be substandard across India.

In Himachal Pradesh, a major drug manufacturing hub, 12 medicines from Solan, 10 from Sirmaur and one from Kangra were found to be substandard. The CDSCO tested 49 samples from across the state, of which 20 were found to be substandard, while the state drug controller’s investigation found that 3 out of 18 samples also failed. Following these results, the drug controller issued notices to the manufacturers and cancelled their production licences. Instructions have also been issued to immediately recall substandard stocks from the market.

Many of the medicines that did not meet quality standards were used for serious health conditions. Oxytocin manufactured by Pushkar Pharma in Sirmaur and used during delivery failed the quality test. Calcium Gluconate, a heart attack drug manufactured by Martin and Brown in Baddi, was also found to be substandard, as was Ceftriaxone, an antibiotic used for pneumonia manufactured by G Laboratory in Paonta Sahib. Gentamicin for infections and Genericart, a blood sugar drug, were similarly found to be substandard.

Two Nimesulide samples from Innovo Captep Company in Jhadmajri failed, while Ciprowin, an antibiotic from Celebrity Biotech and Motocep from Ariso Pharmaceutical in Makhoon Mazra also did not meet the required standards. Promethazine from Nitin Life Science in Kala Amb and cancer drug Ifosfamide from Quality Pharmaceutical failed the test, as did antidepressant Bupron SR manufactured by Digital Vision.

Further investigations revealed that antibiotics Cefoperazone and Piperacillin produced in Baddi were also substandard. Besides, blood pressure drug Torsemi of Solan-based JM Lab and diabetes drug Neurochem of Baddi-based Clesta Pharmaceutical also failed the quality check. Other failed drugs include infection treatment drug Enclave of Wedsp Pharmaceutical in Jhadmajri and pain reliever Stay Happy Trypsin of Trivision Health Care in Baddi.

Taking prompt action, the drug controller has cancelled the manufacturing licences of the concerned pharmaceutical companies and ordered them to recall the substandard drugs. The regulatory authority is working to ensure that the defective products are removed from circulation, thereby protecting public health and maintaining drug safety standards.

This discovery has raised significant concerns about the quality control practices of pharmaceutical companies in Himachal Pradesh, where there are many drug manufacturers. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to address these quality lapses and prevent future incidents.
