PM Modi Meets Zelenskyy at G7 Summit: India, Ukraine Discuss Trade Revival, Economic Cooperation and Peace Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a significant bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian on Wednesday, focusing on restoring trade relations, strengthening economic cooperation and promoting lasting peace amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The meeting reflected the growing engagement between India and Ukraine in recent years, with both leaders expressing a commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, industry and joint development projects.

After the meeting, PM Modi said that India and Ukraine reviewed the progress of their bilateral relations and discussed ways to rebuild trade ties to levels seen before the war.

“India and Ukraine have been engaging extensively in recent times, and this has been reflected in various areas of our cooperation. We both agree that trade ties need to be restored to what they were before the conflict. India will always stand on the side of peace and will place the values of humanity above everything else,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

The high-level discussion was also attended by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, highlighting the strategic importance of the meeting.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also emphasized the strong potential for future cooperation between the two nations. He said both countries are already working on several joint initiatives and agreed to expand collaboration in new areas.

“India and Ukraine have significant opportunities to strengthen mutually beneficial relations. We discussed how ongoing projects can be expanded and how our teams can work together to turn these opportunities into concrete results,” Zelenskyy said.

The meeting came at a time when Ukraine remains a central topic at the G7 Summit, with world leaders discussing additional measures to support the country amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Earlier, G7 leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The group announced additional military and energy assistance, including air defence support, ammunition supplies and efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season.

The latest interaction between PM Modi and President Zelenskyy signals a continued effort by India and Ukraine to maintain diplomatic dialogue, deepen economic engagement and explore new opportunities for cooperation despite the challenges created by the prolonged conflict.
