Palampur University Scientists Secure National Recognition for Sirmaur’s Native Ginger Variety

Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, has brought national recognition to Himachal Pradesh’s indigenous agricultural heritage. The ginger variety “Hatti Sonth” has been officially registered under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001, by the Government of India’s PPV&FR Authority.
Vice-Chancellor Naveen Kumar congratulated the team of scientists—Dr. D.R. Chaudhary, Dr. Pankaj Mittal, Dr. Nimit Kumar, and Dr. Ravinder Singh—for their exemplary work in refining and identifying the variety’s DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability) traits, and for preparing the necessary agronomic and commercial data. He also acknowledged the guidance provided to authorized farmers during the registration process.
The university’s outreach initiatives, including awareness camps conducted in collaboration with the Hatti Kisan Sangh, Sirmaur, played a key role in educating farmers about conserving native varieties and securing their legal rights.
The recognition of Hatti Sonth marks a milestone in preserving local biodiversity and empowering farmers. Registration ensures farmers’ intellectual property rights, acknowledges their contribution to genetic resource conservation, and enhances the variety’s market potential. Known for its unique flavor, high dry matter content, and productivity, Hatti Sonth is cultivated across more than 800 hectares in Sirmaur’s Trans-Giri region, directly benefiting over 8,000 farming families.
The registration is also expected to boost its value in processed products and by-products, thereby increasing farmers’ incomes and ensuring fair pricing.
