Starting from the next academic session, 100 government schools in the state will be affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The state cabinet approved the proposal put forward by the Education Department today. At present, nearly 15,000 government schools in Himachal Pradesh are affiliated with the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education.

According to officials, this move is aimed at improving the quality of education in the state. A senior education department official stated, “It is generally believed that CBSE’s examination pattern is more robust, and the board places a strong emphasis on teacher training. The purpose behind seeking CBSE affiliation is to further enhance the standard of education in the state.”

The initiative is also intended to curb the migration of students from government schools to private schools. The official added, “The attraction towards private schools largely comes from the English medium of instruction and CBSE affiliation. We have already introduced English as the medium of instruction, and now we are moving forward with obtaining CBSE affiliation.”

As per the plan, one school from each assembly constituency will be selected for CBSE affiliation. “More schools from district headquarters will be considered for CBSE affiliation,” the official said. However, the criteria for teacher selection in these schools have not yet been finalized.
