China has called on Indonesia to take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in the country following recent protests, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, Guo added that Beijing understands and respects the Indonesian government’s decision to cancel President Prabowo Subianto’s planned trip to Beijing. Prabowo had been scheduled to attend the “Victory Day” parade on September 3.

Guo noted that representatives of President Prabowo will still participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and the military parade.
