Ukrainian officials said Thursday that Russia launched a massive overnight drone and missile assault on Kyiv, killing 10 people, injuring 38, and damaging residential and other buildings across seven districts.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strike, which also claimed the life of a child, demonstrated Russia’s response to diplomatic efforts — including those by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the war.

“Instead of coming to the negotiating table, Russia chooses ballistics. Instead of ending the war, it continues the killings,” Zelensky wrote on X, calling for tougher sanctions against Moscow.

Kyiv city authorities confirmed at least 38 people were wounded. Emergency services continued search-and-rescue operations, extinguishing fires and combing through debris from destroyed buildings.

Residents endured more than nine hours of air raid alerts as explosions echoed across the capital, filling the night sky with smoke while drones buzzed overhead.

Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 563 of 598 drones and 26 of 31 missiles fired by Russia in the nationwide assault. It said attacks were recorded at 13 locations, with falling debris reported at 26 others.

“Unfortunately, the Russian method of attack is typical — combined strikes from different directions, deliberately targeting ordinary residential buildings,” said Kyiv’s military administration head, Teymur Takachenko, in a Telegram post.

Although Moscow denies targeting civilians, it has intensified aerial bombardments of Ukrainian towns and cities far from the frontlines in recent months.

Officials listed widespread damage to infrastructure, including several high-rise apartment blocks. In Kyiv’s eastern suburb of Darnytskyi, a five-story building was partially destroyed, and rescuers were searching the rubble for survivors. Takachenko said emergency crews were responding to damage across more than 20 sites in the capital.

Separately, Russia’s defense ministry said its air defenses shot down 102 Ukrainian drones overnight targeting at least seven regions. According to Ukraine’s drone forces commander, Ukrainian strikes hit the Afipsky and Kuybyshevsky oil refineries in Russia.
