Relentless rain over the past 24 hours has caused multiple landslides in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, leaving four people dead and two others critically injured. The injured were carried on foot to hospital after an arduous journey due to blocked roads.
In the first incident, a brother and sister lost their lives in the Basodhan panchayat near the district headquarters. According to local sources, the two had stepped outside their home to witness the landslide when they were buried under the debris. Despite villagers’ efforts to rescue them, both were declared dead at the spot.
In another incident in Bhimla panchayat under Mehla block, four women were caught in a landslide while working near their homes. Two died instantly after being struck by falling rocks, while the other two sustained serious injuries.
The injured women received first aid locally before being carried on cots to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chamba. With roads blocked, villagers had no option but to transport them on foot.
Meanwhile, mobile and internet services have been suspended, and all roads leading to Chamba remain blocked due to landslides.
Continuous rainfall has also caused the Ravi River to swell, submerging large portions of Haloon village. At least nine houses have been washed away, while several others are at risk. Authorities confirmed that residents were evacuated in time, and no casualties have been reported from the village.
According to social media reports, soil erosion caused by the river’s strong current has destroyed nearly half of the settlement.
Dalhousie has also been badly hit, with local MLA D.S. Thakur reporting six incidents of cloudbursts in a single day. More than 50 houses are now in danger, while residents have been grappling with power cuts, water shortages, and a lack of mobile connectivity for the past two days.
BJP MLA Janak Raj said mobile networks have been down in Bharmour for two consecutive days, leaving the district administration struggling to establish communication for rescue and relief operations. Concerns remain that some pilgrims on the Mani Mahesh Yatra may be stranded at various locations. The administration has sought Army assistance to help restore connectivity and support relief efforts.
