Himachal: 17 Buffaloes and 8 Calves Found in Postal Parcel Container, Accused Subjected to Public Slap Parade
Sundernagar, August 20 – Tension flared on Tuesday night near Dehvi, close to the Bhawana Tunnel under Sundernagar subdivision, after locals intercepted a postal parcel container stuffed with 17 buffaloes and 8 calves.
According to reports, Raj Thakur, ward member of Jadrol Panchayat and an animal rights activist, had received prior information about the illegal transport. He, along with his associates, first attempted to stop the container at the APMC barrier, but the vehicle sped away. A chase ensued, and the container was finally intercepted near Bhawana Tunnel. On opening it, villagers found the animals crammed inside. Angered by the discovery, the crowd confronted the suspects on the spot and subjected them to a “slap parade.”
The Dehar police outpost team soon arrived at the scene. The accused were identified as Naseem (42), son of Sharif Ahmed from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh; Mohammad Faisal (30), son of Zameer Ahmed from the Qureshiyan locality, Gangoh; and Intzar (32), son of Akhtar from Masjid Jogiya, Nakur.
During questioning, the men admitted they were transporting the buffaloes and calves from Dinak village but could produce no valid documents. This raised further suspicion that the transport could be linked to cattle smuggling. Police also questioned the person from whom the animals were purchased, and after his arrival, the livestock was handed back to him through the local panchayat.
A case has been registered under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), and investigations are underway. The three accused were released with a warning. The development was confirmed by Sundernagar DSP Bharat Bhushan.
