Flood in Thund Nallah Shuts Chhalanda–Peeran Road, Heavy Silt in Fields Causes Major Losses to Farmers

Shimla, August 9 –
Heavy rainfall on Friday afternoon around 3 p.m. triggered a flood in the Thund Nallah in Satlai Panchayat, Mashobra block. The sudden surge of water brought traffic on the Chhalanda–Peeran road to a complete standstill. Floodwaters also entered nearby agricultural fields, depositing large amounts of silt and causing significant damage to crops.

On Saturday, residents of Thund village halted the road restoration work and staged a protest, demanding compensation from the government for the losses suffered by farmers. Upon receiving the information, Naib Tehsildar Junga, Rajendra Thakur, along with a police team and officials from concerned departments, reached the spot and listened to the grievances of the villagers. Road restoration work was resumed afterward.

Dharmendra Kumar, Junior Engineer of the Chhalanda Public Works Department, said the floodwaters were so strong that they washed away a culvert and about 20 meters of road, while around 150 feet of the stretch was buried under silt. Once the protest concluded, restoration was carried out on a war footing, and with the help of a JCB machine, the road was reopened within four hours.

Naib Tehsildar Rajendra Thakur stated that instructions have been issued to the Patwari and relevant departments to assess the damage caused by the silt deposits in the fields. He also urged farmers to submit applications for a joint inspection.

Local resident Deepak Thakur noted that for the past three to four years, floods during the monsoon season in Thund Nallah have been depositing silt in fields, but the government has yet to provide any compensation.

Also present at the site were Kanungo Arvind, Satlai Panchayat Pradhan Netra Singh, Peeran Panchayat Pradhan Kiran Sharma, Patwari Shubham Sharma, and officials from the Public Works, Jal Shakti, Police, and Forest departments.
