Shimla, July 6:
A grand celebration was held at Sambhota Tibetan School in Chotta Shimla to mark the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan community. Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri attended the event as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy CM described the Dalai Lama as a global symbol of peace, compassion, unity, and humanity. He said the Dalai Lama’s life is a shining example of truth, non-violence, and compassion—not just for Tibetans, but for people around the world. He expressed pride in the fact that the Dalai Lama resides in Dharamshala, calling it a matter of great honour for the state. He also credited the Dalai Lama for putting Dharamshala on the international map.
Agnihotri emphasized the importance of every Indian understanding Tibetan history and culture. He said the people and governments of India and Himachal Pradesh have always extended love and brotherhood to the Tibetan community. “We live together like one family,” he said, “and the Tibetan community has found a welcoming environment here.”
The Deputy Chief Minister acknowledged the steps taken by the state government to safeguard the interests of the Tibetan community, noting that successive Congress governments have played a key role in this regard. He recalled former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh’s deep respect for Buddhism and the Dalai Lama. He also highlighted that Tibetans have been granted voting rights—an example of India’s strong democratic values.
He assured that Tibetan artists will be given opportunities to showcase their culture during state fairs and festivals. He also directed the Department of Language, Art & Culture to take active steps to preserve the rich Tibetan cultural heritage, and stressed the need to promote and sustain traditional Tibetan medicine systems.
During the program, he also inaugurated a free health camp. The celebration featured cultural performances by Tibetan community members and school children.
President of the Indo-Tibet Friendship Association, Prof. V.S. Negi, shared insights into Tibetan culture and history. Chief Representative Officer Lhakpa Tsering welcomed the Deputy CM and provided details about the event.
Others present included Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan, Councillor Sheenam Kataria, LTA President Tenzin, former Mayor Rakesh Sharma, and several other dignitaries.
