Shimla, May 15
Deputy Chief Whip of Himachal Pradesh, Kewal Singh Pathania, has voiced strong support for the creation of a dedicated Himalayan Regiment for India’s hill states. Highlighting the state’s proud martial legacy, he said that Himachal Pradesh is a land of bravehearts, with a long tradition of contributing valiant soldiers to the Indian Army. He noted that the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, Major Somnath Sharma, hailed from this very region.

Pathania emphasized the need for a separate regiment to represent the hill states, saying it would open up more opportunities for the youth of these regions to serve in the armed forces and allow their unique capabilities to be channeled toward national defense.

He also called on the central government to adopt a tougher stance against ceasefire violations, adding that the Himachal government remains alert and committed to the safety of its citizens, especially in border areas.

Commenting on a recent statement by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah, Pathania described it as unfortunate and said it was not in line with the ideals envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi.

“All citizens are equal, and the national flag belongs to each of the 1.4 billion Indians. No one needs a certificate to prove their patriotism,” he said.

Pathania further urged the BJP to abandon its double standards and demanded that the Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister resign from his position in light of the remarks.
