Shimla, May 13:
With tensions between India and Pakistan now easing following a ceasefire, the Congress party is pressing for a special session of Parliament to discuss recent developments and other pressing national matters. Himachal Pradesh Cabinet Minister Vikramaditya Singh has echoed this demand, while also urging a ban on apple imports from Turkey.
Speaking on the recent cross-border military action, Singh said the country has stood firmly behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. “The Indian Army carried out a decisive strike on terror camps across the border, and the nation, cutting across political lines, appreciated the move,” he said. “There is unity on this issue, and the Prime Minister has the full support of the opposition.”
However, Singh raised concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the U.S. President’s remarks on the ceasefire. “Even in the Prime Minister’s national address, there was no direct reference to the nature or terms of the ceasefire,” he noted. Given the gravity of the situation, he reiterated the Congress party’s call for a special parliamentary session. “The opposition has extended full support to the government on national security. It is now time to hold open discussions in the House on all related matters,” he added.
Turning to trade issues, Singh also demanded a halt to apple imports from Turkey. “Just like China, Turkey sided with Pakistan during a time of heightened tension. Continuing to import apples from Turkey, especially when our own growers are suffering, sends the wrong message,” he said. He emphasized that such imports are severely impacting apple farmers in Himachal Pradesh. “This issue will be taken up strongly by the state government and our Chief Minister,” Singh assured.
The minister’s remarks highlight a growing push from the opposition for transparency and accountability in both national security and economic policy—especially as international alignments shift and domestic industries feel the strain.
