Rajouri/Shahpur, May 10: Amid intense cross-border shelling by Pakistan in the Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh’s valiant son, Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, laid down his life defending the nation. Deployed with the 25 Punjab Regiment, he stood his ground bravely, retaliating fiercely until his final breath.

Subedar Major Kumar hailed from a proud military family—his father, Garja Singh, is a retired Havildar from the Indian Army, while his mother is a homemaker. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. News of his martyrdom has cast a pall of grief over the region, but it is accompanied by an overwhelming sense of pride that this land gave birth to such a courageous soul.

Locals remember him as the embodiment of discipline, courage, and leadership. From a young age, he dreamed of serving the country in uniform—a dream he fulfilled with distinction. His life was a testament to duty and sacrifice.

The heartbreaking news reached the family around 8 a.m. on Saturday, plunging the entire village and surrounding areas into mourning. Grieving residents have been gathering at the family’s home to offer condolences. Eyes are wet, but heads are held high.

Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa confirmed the martyrdom and stated that the Shahpur SDM, Kartar Chand, has been dispatched to the martyr’s home. The soldier’s mortal remains are expected to arrive by tonight or early tomorrow.

District authorities and Army officials remain in close contact with the bereaved family, and preparations for the final rites are underway. The supreme sacrifice of Subedar Major Pawan Kumar stands as a solemn reminder that our soldiers remain ever-ready to defend the nation—no matter the danger, no matter the cost.
