First Consignment of Himachali Peas Reaches Haryana’s HMT Mandi, Fetches Up to ₹52/Kg

Solan, April 11: The arrival of the first consignment of Himachali peas has revived business buzz at HMT Mandi in Haryana, where fresh green peas from Karsog and Theog were welcomed with traditional puja rituals by local commission agents. The crop opened strong, fetching prices between ₹41 to ₹52 per kilogram on the very first day.

The mandi atmosphere was electric, as traders from across the country—particularly Mumbai and Bengaluru—flocked to make early purchases, signaling a promising season ahead for Himachali farmers.

However, the growing popularity of Haryana’s HMT Mandi is casting a shadow over Himachal’s own Parwanoo Mandi, once a key trading hub for apples and vegetables. Despite its long history—trading apples since 1985—Parwanoo Mandi has reportedly seen a steep decline due to lack of basic infrastructure and policy missteps.

Last year, thousands of farmers suffered losses when the Himachal government abruptly enforced the use of universal cartons, rendering their existing telescopic cartons useless. The backlash led many farmers and traders to explore alternatives, including mandis outside the state.

In contrast, Haryana’s mandis, including HMT, offer better facilities and do not charge trade fees, making them a more attractive destination. This shift has led to more apple and vegetable trade being recorded in HMT Mandi than Parwanoo last year.

Farmers and commission agents alike are now questioning the Himachal government’s commitment to supporting local agriculture and horticulture. Many believe that without a clear policy and investment in mandi infrastructure, the state risks losing its produce markets to neighboring states.

As Himachal’s high-quality peas begin their market journey in Haryana, the message is loud and clear—better facilities and market access are now driving the future of farming trade.
