Chandigarh Police files a Zero FIR after receiving a complaint about an alleged offence committed outside their jurisdiction.
The Himachal Pradesh Police on Sunday registered a zero FIR against a man from Sikar in Rajasthan for allegedly raping a woman in Chandigarh on the pretext of marrying her.
According to the Himachal Pradesh Police, the zero FIR was registered at a regional police station in the state’s Kangra district in connection with the crime committed in December 2024.
Palampur DSP Lokendra Singh Negi told Diary Times, “The victim hails from Kangra and the incident took place in Chandigarh. The suspect claimed to the victim that he is an Army officer of Captain rank. We have referred the matter to the Chandigarh Police for further investigation.”
According to sources, the victim told the police that she met the suspect, Sumit Badla, on Instagram. “The two started chatting on social media and agreed to meet in Chandigarh. As per the victim’s statement, the suspect met her in Sector 8 and took her to a hotel, where he allegedly raped her. The victim said she agreed to meet Sumit Badla after he promised her that he would marry her. Later, he went back on his promise and threatened to kill her,” a source said.
“The victim has provided a photograph of the suspect to the police. These details about the suspect have been forwarded to the Chandigarh police. The Chandigarh police have also registered an FIR at Sector 3 police station, as Sector 8 falls under the jurisdiction of PS 3. The victim in her complaint said the suspect met her once in Jalandhar, but he forcibly had physical relations with her in Chandigarh,” the source said.
The police register a Zero FIR after receiving a complaint about an alleged crime committed in the jurisdiction of another police station. They then transfer the FIR to the concerned police station for further investigation.
