The Himachal Pradesh government has unveiled plans to upgrade the Dhalli-Narkanda road into a four-lane highway, addressing the persistent traffic congestion that plagues the region. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the project will include the construction of tunnels, which aims to improve traffic flow for both commuters and tourists while enhancing regional connectivity. Additionally, the government plans to strengthen the Mashobra-Bhekalti road, providing alternative routes to alleviate pressure on existing infrastructure.

The Dhalli-Kufri-Theog road has been a major source of daily traffic jams, causing significant delays for commuters and local residents. The narrowness of the road struggles to handle the growing number of vehicles, particularly during tourist seasons. As a result, essential services and emergency vehicles often face difficulty navigating the route, worsening the inconvenience.

The proposed four-lane highway, complete with tunnels, is expected to provide long-term relief by reducing travel times and minimizing environmental impacts, an important factor given the area’s ecological sensitivity. Strengthening the Mashobra-Bhekalti road will also provide an alternative route, helping to ease congestion on the busy Dhalli-Kufri-Theog stretch.

While the four-lane project holds promise for significant improvements, experts have called for immediate measures to manage traffic. This includes improved traffic management, designated parking areas, and restrictions on heavy vehicles during peak hours to help alleviate the current congestion until the road upgrades are completed.

The Dhalli-Narkanda road is a critical link to popular tourist destinations like Kufri and Narkanda. Once upgraded, it is expected to boost tourism, enhance commuter convenience, and contribute to the region’s economic growth. However, the success of the project will depend on timely execution, obtaining necessary environmental clearances, and minimizing disruptions during construction.
